My Own Journey From Discipline To Devotion

The truth is, discipline served me well for a long time. It helped me nail a 3.9 GPA and get into a competitive nursing program. It gave me the grit to stick to a strict gluten-free, dairy-free, low-sugar diet that helped heal my gut after years of struggles following Accutane for my skin. It allowed me to juggle school, work, caring for my dogs and horses, working out, and still maintaining a decent social life through college.

But then, something changed. As I added more goals to my plate and tried to accomplish everything, I started to burn out. My energy tank was on empty, and when I couldn’t white-knuckle my way through the habits, schedules, and goals I’d set for myself, it eroded my confidence and trust in myself. Discipline was no longer delivering the results it once had.

Then one day, while listening to a sermon, the word devotion was mentioned—and something just clicked. I started to think about how I could apply this concept to every area of my life. Unlike discipline, which often felt cold, rigid, and punishing, devotion felt warm, purposeful, and filled with love. It wasn’t about forcing myself to stick to a routine or achieve a goal—it was about committing to what truly mattered to me, from a place of intention and care.

This simple shift—from discipline to devotion—was nothing short of life-changing. It softened the edges of how I approached my goals and allowed me to work with my natural rhythms instead of against them.

  • “I tackle this task because I’m passionate about my goals and the impact they can have on my life and others.”

While the difference between discipline and devotion may seem subtle, the shift can be life-changing. 

The Limitations of Discipline

Discipline can undoubtedly be a powerful tool. It provides structure, helps build habits, and can drive you to push through challenging situations. For some people and certain scenarios, discipline is exactly what’s needed to stay on track and achieve goals.

But here’s the catch: discipline doesn’t always work for everyone or every situation. Why? Because discipline often relies on external motivations and sheer willpower, and willpower is a finite resource. When life gets busy, stressful, or overwhelming—especially for highly sensitive people—discipline can quickly start to feel like a heavy burden rather than a helpful guide.

Here are a few common ways discipline can set you up for failure:

  • It creates a cycle of guilt and shame. If you miss a workout, skip journaling, or don’t follow through on a task, it’s easy to feel like you’ve “failed.” This can lead to a negative spiral of self-criticism that makes it even harder to get back on track.

Okay, But What Exactly Is a Highly Sensitive Person?

A highly sensitive person  or HSP is someone with a nervous system that’s biologically wired to process stimuli more deeply. This term comes from the research of psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron, who introduced the concept of sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) in the 1990s. Studies show that roughly 15–20% of the population has this trait, making it a common—yet often misunderstood—aspect of personality and biology.

Being an HSP doesn’t mean you’re fragile or overly emotional. It means your brain processes and responds to stimuli—like sounds, sights, smells, and even emotions—more thoroughly than others. This heightened sensitivity is rooted in how the brain processes information, particularly in areas like the insula and the mirror neuron system, which are more active in HSPs. These brain regions are linked to empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation.

As a result, HSPs tend to:

  • Feel emotions deeply. They might cry more easily, experience intense joy, or feel overwhelmed by negative feelings.
  • Pick up on subtleties. They notice small changes in their environment, like someone’s tone of voice or a shift in mood.
  • Need more downtime. Because their nervous system works harder to process stimuli, HSPs often need extra rest to recover from overstimulation.
